Please wear a casual summer ‘sun’ dress and enjoy a morning of tea, sweets, and the chance to meet all the candidates for 2011 – 2012 National Hereford Queen’s contest. This will also be a fun way to meet young ladies who are Hereford enthusiasts from across our nation. Please bring your camera as those in attendance will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken with National Hereford Queen Bethany Nolan and our State Queens.

Parents and young ladies ages of three through thirteen years of age are invited to attend. Parents are asked to accompany children under the age of eight years old. National Hereford Queen Bethany Nolan anticipates this to be a royal event with food, fun, and an overview of etiquette and the tradition of tea by Ms. Diane Johnson, proprietor, Details by Design.

What do you like most about being queen?

I like watching the show and the kids. It also enjoyable being a mentor to the youth. Representing the great state of Texas is special to me as well.

What would you say to young girls to encourage them to get involved with the Hereford industry and queen program?

Girls dominate. It is a lot of fun being queen. When your involved in a breed, such as Herefords you gain another family.

What are your future aspirations?

I would like to attend Texas Tech of A&M to obtain a degree in Agriculture Communications.

What do you like most about being queen?

I really enjoy meeting new people throughout the United States.

Best memory as queen

The queen competition at Kansas City last October was my favorite queen memory.

What are your future aspirations?

I plan to attend Veterinary Technician school, own my own Hereford farm, raise a family and teach my children about Hereford cattle.

Queen Orienation

Monday afternoon was a lot of fun! All of the state queens came together for queen orientation which was held in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Debbie Wiley did an excellent job of educating the young women about proper etiquette, social skills, and table manners! The queens will have the opportunity to demonstrate their new skills at the National Hereford Women Breakfast, held this morning at the Farm Bureau building at the fairgrounds.

Opening ceremonies also took place on Monday. The event began with the parade of state flags and juniors followed by Katie Killian, National Hereford Queen holding the American flag. Randy Owen entertained the crowd with a wonderful rendition of our National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Finally in Indy!

Today marks the first day of the 2010 Junior National Hereford Expo held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Queen orientation begins at p.m. in Meeting room #4 of the Blue Ribbon Pavilion. This year we are privileged to have Debbie Wiley as our guest speaker. Debbie lives in Carmel Indiana with her husband Mark and they have enjoyed raising 5 children and are now experiencing the joys of grandparenting, with grandbaby #7 being born on Mother’s Day.Debbie works at WTHR- Channel 13in Indianapolis, as the Executive Assistant to thePresident and General Manager and earned a degree from Butler University in Journalism and Communications. Debbie has worked for a professional modeling agency and the Indiana Cotillion Society as an instructor. She is a very experienced judge within many pageant systems including judging the Indiana State Fair Queen pageant in 2008, the Kentucky State Fair, the Mrs. Kentucky Pageant and within the Miss America Organization. Debbie won the titles of Mrs. Indiana America and Mrs. Indiana USA. Debbie has been seen as an on camera talent for WFYI Public Television during all of their fundraising campaigns. She is the Co-Executive Director of the Miss Central Indiana Pageant, a preliminary to the Miss Indiana Pageant and she currently serves as the President of the Local Directors Association.

Be on the look out this week for the official queen T-shirts which the young ladies will be wearing when they are not busy in the show ring handing out awards and prizes!

I’ve Been Everywhere, Man.

That seems to be my theme song these past couple months! In January and February, I attended Denver, Fort Worth – twice –, and San Angelo. Denver was, as always, so much fun. The weather was wonderfully mild – which anyone who has been to the National Western can agree is a blessing! I attended the Carload and Pen show for the first time, and it was a great experience. I attended the Fort Worth Junior Shows the next weekend. The last weekend in January, I had to fight a blizzard to get the Fort Worth Open Show! Biting my nails waiting for the roads to open was not fun, but the weekend most definitely was. Being from Texas, I’d like to brag and say the hospitality there was the very best – but the truth is, every show I have been to has been amazing. After those hectic weeks, were two weeks of catching up on homework and then I went to San Angelo. I love this stock show because of the close-knit atmosphere that the Hereford breeders have. Next up on the calendar is Houston; try to keep warm and have a wonderful beginning of spring!

A few firsts

On Sunday, November 1, 2009 at the conclusion of the Hereford bull show our first National Hereford Queen was crowned. Due to the change in our queen's title there was a new banner made and donated by Sandy Meyer of Classic Leather Designs. The new banner is made of a Hereford hide and white leather with red and white grommets. The retired National Polled Hereford Queen banner will be placed in the Gammon Barn in Iowa at the conclusion of our current queen, Kirbie Day's reign after Denver. Beacon Hill Ranch and the Mehaffey/Phelps family donated the crown box which was hand tooled by Classic Leather Designs. The crown was donated by the Georgia Poll-Ettes and Whaley Herefords. Miss Congeniality and the national queen will both receive a pair of boots of their choice donated by Double H Boot Company.

All of our state queens did an excellent job handing out awards during the junior and open show. The results of the competition were as followed: Miss Congeniality and 2nd Runner-Up, Kara Bielema from Michigan, 1st Runner-Up, Courtney Tribble from Washington, and the new queen is Katie Killian from Texas.

Kirbie Day, the 2009 National Polled Hereford Queen will continue her reign through the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Co. Katie and Kirbie will both be attending the North American Livestock Expo in Louisville, KY, Western Nugget in Reno, NV and the National Western.

Hello and welcome. I believe that a great introduction is key to any situation. My name is Margeaux and I am currently the chairman for the National Hereford Women's National Hereford Queen program. I was asked to start this blog in response to increased interest in this program and the need to provide accurate up to date information. I will update frequently with events in our program. Our National Hereford Queen, Katie Killian will also provide us with some comments. Please stay tuned for more info!
